STEMSpark Geospatial Academy
June 3 - 5, 2014
8:30am - 3:45pm
L&N STEM Academy, Knoxville
Come learn about geospatial technologies (GT), one of the three fastest growing employment sectors in the U.S. along with nanotechnology and biotechnology (Gewin 2004). Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) are powerful data collection & analysis tools with practical applications for biologists, environmental scientists, ecologists, government agencies, geographers, demographers, civil and environmental engineers, agricultural scientists and in business related to banking, real estate, transportation and logistics, insurance, and economics.
In this three day workshop, middle and high school teachers will develop geospatial science and technology background knowledge and skills. They will learn how to incorporate GT activities into their curriculum (CCSS, NGSS, and TN Social Studies Standards) to support problem based learning and student engagement in hands-on learning projects. Participants will use GPS and GIS to access and use industry standard software, ArcGIS Online, to support students’ learning.
